What Is the Phuket Vegetarian Festival?
Known locally as Jia Chai, the festival lasts nine days and nine nights. Devotees dress in white and follow a strict meat-free diet, and the shrines hold ceremonies throughout the week. The festival honours the Nine Emperor Gods, who are formally sent off on the final night.
Some of the best-known rituals are the Koi Han bridge-crossing and the Koi Hoi fire walk. In 2018 the festival was listed as intangible cultural heritage.
The street processions are the part most visitors remember. They are loud and intense, with drums and firecrackers. They also include mediums known as Ma Song who walk in a trance, some with their cheeks pierced. It is a religious event first and a spectacle second, which is worth keeping in mind when you watch.

How to Take Part Respectfully
- Wear white if you plan to join a ceremony or walk alongside a procession.
- Give processions space. Keep a respectful distance from the mediums and their teams, and follow the directions of marshals and police along the route.
- Protect your ears. Firecrackers are part of the processions. Bring ear protection, especially for children, and wear closed shoes and long trousers.
- Ask before close-up photos of devotees, and never step into a procession to get a shot.
- Keep the diet in mind if you eat at a shrine or a flagged stall. Bring food that follows the festival rules, or none at all.
Festival Food: What “Jay” Means
During the festival, devotees eat “jay” food. That means no meat, poultry, seafood or dairy, and no pungent vegetables such as garlic and onions. Stalls serving it are easy to spot: they are marked with red-and-yellow flags printed with Chinese characters.
You do not need to follow the diet to enjoy the food. Ordering a few dishes from a flagged stall is the simplest way to take part, and it lets you see the festival in a more relaxed setting than a procession.
Planning a Festival Day From Karon
Karon is on the west coast, while the night procession on 11 October takes place in Phuket City. A little planning makes the day easier:
- Choose your evening. If you only go once, plan around the night procession on Sunday 11 October or the closing rituals on Sunday 18 October.
- Check the shrine’s schedule the day before. Processions run from different shrines between 11 and 18 October, and each has its own route.
- Allow extra travel time. Roads on procession routes can close for a while, and parking near busy shrines is hard to find. A taxi or ride-hailing car is usually simpler than driving yourself.
- Pack for the weather. A light rain jacket, water, ear protection and a white top cover most situations.
- Plan a quiet day after. Festival days are long and noisy. A slow morning back in Karon is a good balance.
What October Is Like in Karon
The festival falls at the turn of Thailand’s seasons. The southwest monsoon usually covers the country from mid-May to mid-October and brings cloudy, rainy weather, especially on the coasts. The northeast monsoon follows from around mid-October, but the change-over varies from year to year, according to the Thai government’s public relations department.
In practice, plan around the weather rather than against it:
- Keep a rain jacket or umbrella in your day bag, especially for evening events.
- Check the sea and the beach flags before you swim, and stay out of the water when red flags are up.
- Have an indoor plan for wet afternoons, such as a spa, a gym session or a café.
- Look at the Thai Meteorological Department forecast before a day trip to Phuket City.
